Rooney's Funeral Home, located in Alberton, Prince Edward
Island, is owned and operated by David Smith, a life long
resident of Alberton.
The Rooney Funeral Home was established in 1955 by a Mill
River native E. Gerald Rooney. Mr. Rooney apprenticed at
MacDougall and Brown Funeral Home in Toronto where he received
his license. He and his wife Reta Griffin, who was also a
licensed embalmer operated the funeral home and ambulance
business until E. Gerald's sudden death in September
1983. Reta continued to operate the firm until 1987 when
it was purchased by Davis Smith.
In 1988 an additional slumber room was added to the original
building aqnd in 1995 a major renovation was completed. A
100 foot by 15 foot foyer was added to the front of the building
with wheelchair access and a third slumber room was added.
The slumber rooms are divided by folding doors.
The
main level of the funeral home has three slumber rooms, all are
accessible from the new foyer, and a sitting room. The
office, cloak room and men's and ladies washrooms and casket
selection room are also on the main level. The second
level has a coffee lounge, kitchen, washroom and office.
David Smith became interested in funeral service in 1973 and
began his apprenticeship in 1977 under Mr. Rooney, he received
his license in 1979. David continued to work at the
funeral home until he purchased it in 1987.
